Render Clouds
“Render Clouds” is a series of works specifically created for viewing on Baltimore’s LED Art Billboard. This series consists of images of clouds taken from popular past and present video games such as Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis, and Mega Man 64 for the Nintendo 64. When displayed on the LED Art Billboard the clouds blend in with the surrounding natural environment. But at the same time, the clouds stand on their own, making an obvious juxtaposition between the human-made, computer-generated environment and the existing natural elements. The computer-generated clouds provide a window into humanity’s desire to create a virtual reality that replicates the Earth’s natural systems and depicts how far we have come from the early days of the first home computers to our commonplace high definition gaming systems.
